Sixth Session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP6) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

Background

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the General Assembly by its resolution 61/106 of 13 December 2006. It came into force on 3 May 2008 upon the 20th ratification. Article 40 of the Convention stipulates that “The States Parties shall meet regularly in a Conference of States Parties in order to consider any matter with regard to the implementation of the present Convention.” Since 2008, five sessions of the Conference of States Parties have been held at United Nations Headquarters, New York.

Theme:

Ensuring adequate standard of living: empowerment and participation of persons with disabilities within the framework of the CRPD.

Sub-themes:

  • Economic empowerment through inclusive social protection and poverty reduction strategies.
  • Disability-inclusive development in national, regional and international processes.
  • Community-based rehabilitation and habilitation for inclusive society.

Participation is invited from Civil Society Organizations and National Human Rights Institutions.

ICTs for Disability Inclusive Development Efforts

Details: The Broadband Commission for Digital Development, G3ICT, IDA, ITU, Microsoft, the Telecentre.org Foundation and UNESCO have recently carried out a global consultation the contribution of ICTs to advance the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of development efforts. The panellists will discuss the findings of this consultation, which include a proposal of key priority areas of action to be undertaken by each stakeholder. CART services will be available.

A review of success factors for the development and implementation by States Parties of policies promoting inclusive information and communication technologies for persons with disabilities leveraging the framework of the CRPD.  The panel will discuss, as an example, the model policy on "Inclusive ICTs for Education," jointly developed in 2013 by UNESCO and G3ict.
