G3ict Presents ICT Accessibility Week in Turkey

Joint Briefing between the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce-IT Committee and G3ict: “ICT Accessibility as a Competitive Tool” (3 hours)

Venue: Istanbul Chamber of Commerce | Timings: 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (preceded by lunch 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

Attendees: 300-400 participants, among Chamber’s Industry members in the IT business (around 14,000 enterprises)

Speakers: Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, Turkish industry (Microsoft, Turkcell, TTNET, Garanti Bank) and IT entrepreneurs, government officials, G3ict

Objective: Promote the importance of accessibility for the Turkish IT industry domestically and for exports; provide examples of good programs and policies and promote public procurement policies as a good incentive for the IT industry, influence local authorities.

Briefing: “Global Trends in Innovation and Good Practices in Mobile Accessibility” (3 hours)

Objective: Discuss latest good practices in mobile accessibility from around the world and point to effective, technology neutral policy making.

G3ict sessions to be held during the Annual Conference of the Turkish Confederation of Persons with Disabilities, a three-day event (Oct 9-11) that brings together 250-300 participants among Turkish advocates, government officials, academia and private sector.

Confederation Conference Plenary Session #1: "ICT Accessibility Dispositions of the CRPD: Implications for Policy Making Among States Parties” (1 hour)

Venue: Demora Hotel | Timings: 4:20 p.m. - 5:20 p.m.

This session will provide a complete guide to interpreting the dispositions of the CRPD for the purpose of implementing policies at the national level including government programs, legislation, regulations while involving persons with disabilities and the private sector. Topics will cover the building blocks of ICT accessibility in the text of the CRPD, the progresses made by States Parties to the CRPD in implementing its dispositions on ICT accessibility and assistive technologies, which gaps are of most concern and the type of policies that can remediate such gaps.

The session will provide an overview of the model policies developed by G3ict in cooperation with the ITU, UNESCO and other international organizations on supporting legislative frameworks, the accessibility of public access points, TV, web sites and e-government, mobile and public procurement. A more detailed review of the model public procurement policy will serve as an example of steps that States Parties can take to close crucial policy gaps while leveraging international accessibility standards benefiting persons with disabilities, government and industry.

Confederation Conference Plenary Session #2: “Leveraging Accessible and Assistive ICTs for Life-long Learning and Employability (1 hour)
Venue: Demora Hotel, Ankara | Timings: 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

This session will review the considerable benefits that information and communication technologies can bring to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in education, life-long learning and employment opportunities. Starting with an overview of the G3ict-UNESCO model policy for Inclusive ICTs in Education, the session will focus on critical success factors for ICT accessibility implementation in both education and workplace settings.

Those include: 1/ capacity building and support to educators and employers, with examples from various countries; 2/ leveraging existing technologies features to eliminate barriers for persons with disabilities with practical examples and demonstrations; 3/ a review of the most promising international accessibility standards and their benefits for all stakeholders involved. The session will be presented by speakers with considerable experience in those three areas and will include time for Q&As and interactions with the audience.

Confederation Conference G3ict Seminar: “How to Promote the Usage of ICTs in Support of Inclusive Education" (2.5 hours)

Venue: Demora Hotel, Ankara | Timings: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

This session will examine the opportunities that are currently under leveraged to harness the power of ICTs to include students with disabilities in Education activities. This session will review latest trends and provide a comprehensive update on:

  • Technology in the context of inclusive education
  • Disability demographics in the classroom, impact on students and schools
  • Issues met by special educator in regard to technology
  • G3ict UNESCO policy for inclusive ICTs in education
  • Example of good practices in Turkey: case studies addressing the needs of students with various types of disability in the context of the FATIH project

Audience: Conference attendees plus selected participants among key government officials, advocates, educators and other stakeholders by invitation.
