Court: Movie Theaters Must Accommodate Deaf-Blind Patrons
The Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a ruling against the third-largest movie chain in the US - Cinemark, concluded that Federal disability law requires movie theaters to provide specialized interpreters to patrons who are deaf and blind. It also noted that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, public accommodations would also imply furnishing “auxiliary aids and services” to patrons with vision, hearing and speech disabilities.

The Dutch Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations has begun consultation concerning the accessibility of the government. The decision is in line with the implementation of Directive (EU) 2016/2102 and mandatory governmental directives to apply accessibility standard EN 301 549. The ministry expects the scheme to ensure that government agencies make their websites and apps accessible to the elderly and persons with disabilities.

EU Moves Toward Mandated Mobile App Accessibility
In April 2017, the European Commission advised the European Standards Organizations (ESOs) through Mandate 554 to develop digital accessibility standards for both public sector websites and mobile applications. These new standards build on the EU’s 2016 Web and Mobile Accessibility Directive and go further by extending the standards to specifically address mobile apps, but also by making the standards binding for member states.
