International Seminar on the Implementation of the World Report on Disability


On occasion of the launch of the Portuguese version of the WHO_World Bank release, World Report on Disability, an International Seminar took place in São Paulo, Brazil from February 23-25, 2012.
 
The event was organized by the São Paulo State Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in cooperation with the Global Partnership on Disability and Development (GPDD), World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, the Latin American Network of Non-Governmental Organization of Persons with Disabilities and their Families, the Brazilian Association of Physical Medicine, and the Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Network.

During the seminar, discussions focused on the identification of the main challenges to the implementation of the World Report on Disability’s recommendations, especially in areas such as healthcare and rehabilitation. Panelists featured Ms. Akiko Ito, Chief of the Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Ms. Aleksandra Posarac, Lead Human Development Economist at the World Bank, Ms. Linamara Battistella, Sau Paulo State Secretary for the Rights of the Person with Disability, and Ms. Maria Reina, Executive Director of the GPDD.

Besides the launch of Portuguese version of the report, the event also included a Workshop about the Implementation of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health – ICF and a demonstration of how the Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Network is improving the life of people with disabilities throughout the country.

The overall goal of the three-day seminar, which was attended by approximately 700 people, was to promote the equalization of opportunities for persons with and without disabilities, in accordance with the principles established by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
 
The Portuguese version of the World Report on Disability, jointly published by the WHO and the World Bank, follows the French, Spanish, German, Turkish and Chinese translations and renders this precious source of information available to an audience of more than 230 million Portuguese-speaking people.
