Conference on Disability-Inclusive MDGs and Aid Effectiveness

Jointly organized by Leonard Cheshire Disability and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, this conference will bring together disabled people’s organizations (DPOs), NGOs, UN agencies and academics to discuss and share knowledge around innovative ways to mainstream disability into international development efforts. The event will take place at the United Nations Conference Centre of Bangkok, Thailand, from March 14-16, 2012.

The Global Partnership for Disability and Development (GPDD) will be present at this important event and Ms. Maria Veronica Reina, GPDD’s Executive Director, will present at a panel on aid and development effectiveness.

Presentations during the three days will highlight how disability-inclusive development is essential to fully achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In particular discussion will focus on the following topics: review of international and regional mandates on disability and aid effectiveness; challenges and good practices in measuring the impact and quality of disability-inclusive development, including implementation and monitoring of the MDGs; identifying ways to implement disability-inclusive development effectively on the ground and at the policy level.

The event will also provide an excellent platform for sharing lessons learnt and ways to improve the quality and effectiveness of development cooperation through the inclusion of persons with disabilities. The main goal of the conference is in fact to support development practitioners in finding effective and cost effective ways to empower people with disabilities and improve their standards of life.

Recommendations gathered during this three-day event will feed into the regional preparatory process towards the conclusion of the Second Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons in 2012.
