Presenting on Emerging Assistive Technologies at CSUN 2014

Robert Pearson presented at the 29th Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference (CSUN), held in San Diego, California, from March 17-22, 2014. Read his event review.

With insightful pre-conference workshops, the first official day of CSUN 2014 saw a packed convention center with engaging presentations and a robust exhibit hall. Conference sponsors held many major events in their suites and there were dinners, meetings, activities to attend, and networking - one of the most important aspects of this conference - was underway. Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) also hosted their annual reception this year and we look forward to seeing all of our attendees once again next year.

There were many prevalent themes through the sessions and tracks were categorized as per the type of disability, for example: AAC, Blind / Low Vision, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Learning Disability, Web Accessibility, among others. The topics focused on Web, Mobile, Math, Cognitive Accessibility, CVAA, IAAP, Documents, Social, HTML5, ARIA, AT, Gaming, and Android versus iOS.

For an overview of these trends and all of the presentations given at this year's conference, visit The Great Big List.

The conference runs over four days, not including the pre-conference sessions, and as such it quickly becomes apparent that one cannot possibly attend all sessions, and network and present as well. An organization might have to send a team just to be able to get a good overview of the breadth of this conference. An important question that was raised this year was whether there may be a need for separate tracks for developers, managers, designers and others in the future.

Important announcements came from a few organizations. Comcast made a debut with their accessible TV services. The W3C also released their official ARIA 1.0 recommendation. Rumor has it that there Microsoft is planning an Assistive Technology update to its Windows Phone. The International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), of which Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) is a founding member, was officially launched at CSUN. We, as an organization, are excited to be a part of this initiative, to contribute our experience and knowledge to the development and advancement of the practice going forward. There will be more to discuss in this regard in the future. In the meantime, you can follow IAAP on Twitter.

There was recognition this year of all the work coming out of Canada with regards to standards, design, development, media, web, and more towards accessibility implementation. Track the discussions around these topics on Twitter using the hashtag #CSUN14. For news from the conference, please visit the AMI Twitter feed: @a11ymedia.
