Target Launches Documentary on Inclusive Design and Accessibility

Target has dipped its toes into the world of documentary filmmaking with its first-ever short film, “Design for All.” The 54-minute documentary, now available to stream on Hulu, takes a look at inclusive design and how accessibility can lead to a more understanding and healthy community.

“What does design mean? How does it impact us?” the description on Hulu reads. “’Design for All’ examines how an inclusive approach to design affects culture and improves the ways we relate to the built environment, to our communities, and to one another.”

In recent years, Target has taken the lead in offering inclusive design and adaptive clothing items for both kids and adults with special needs and/or physical disabilities. “Design for All” follows one designer behind the Target brand Cat & Jack, which focuses on sensory-friendly and functional items for kids with disabilities, who is inspired by her daughter with special needs.

“I always look at function first,” Stacey Monsen of Cat & Jack says in the trailer.

The documentary also follows two other pioneers in the inclusive design movement, including one woman who “hacks” products to make them work with her disability, and a female architect who is breathing life back into the community that raised her, thereby inspiring the younger generation to get involved in making their surroundings great.

“To do really great design, let’s not design for people. Let’s design with people,” the trailer states.

Todd Waterbury, chief creative officer of Target, said via a press release on Target’s website, “Our hope with this documentary is that it’s a new way we can use our voice to help amplify the voices of others who are doing extraordinary work in their own ways, who are using design to create more access for all.”
