Indian Telecom Regulator TRAI's Views on ICT Solutions for Persons with Disabilities to Be Released by June 2018
January 09, 2018
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will issue recommendations to make information and communications technology (ICT) accessible for persons with disabilities (PwDs) by June 2018.
TRAI has asked service providers and stakeholders to respond with comments on the consultation paper issued in December 2017 in order to make ICT services more inclusive. The deadlines for comments and counter comments on the consultation paper are January 22, 2018 and February 5, 2018, respectively.
According to the TRAI, since access to telecommunication and broadcasting services have become an essential part of everyday life, necessary steps to ensure that PwDs are able to access these services have to be taken. The objective of the consultation paper is to identify key areas which need policy intervention in order to understand the barriers faced by the PwDs while accessing telecommunication and broadcasting services. Through the consultation paper, TRAI aims to take affirmative action in the form of recommendations, regulations or advisory to telecom equipment/service providers.
