Supporting Efforts to Integrate Disability Rights into National Policies in Uzbekistan
Posted on July 12, 2024
Following the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2021, the government of Uzbekistan initiated efforts to integrate disability rights into national policies.
The World Bank has been supporting the government's efforts to enhance the rights of persons with disabilities and improve the country's accessibility through the Disability Inclusion in Uzbekistan Technical Assistance program.
Last week, World Bank experts, led by Gulrano Tlepova, a Social Development Specialist, and Andres Balcazar, an international expert on accessibility and certified professional in the issues of accessible built environments, and G3ict Country Advocate for Mexico, engaged with counterparts in two significant areas.
In close collaboration with the Social Inspection under the National Agency for Social Protection, our experts provided assistance in developing Uzbekistan's Accessibility Code, based on the best international practices in universal design.
Additionally, in partnership with the Competence Development Institute under the Ministry of Construction and Communal Services, the Bank's team organized a capacity-building training for 500 representatives from regional and district departments of architecture and construction, as well as design institutes, to introduce international accessibility standards.
